Points Of Entry

These objects are sacred reflections on a moment of connection between two families that were once enemies. Following the artist's marriage, her family from, Aiken, South Carolina and her husband’s family, refugees from Mosul, Iraq wrote letters to greet one another. The buttons at the base of each sculpture play audio recordings of the letters being read and translated to each receiving family. Their designs utilize symbols historically associated with entry into someones home, symbols that can still be identified at architectural gateways in each family’s respective culture.
